This is an early Simone coloring. Circa 2009.
It could happen. A pink woman with purple hair and a turquoise man with matching hair could swing a black child with black hair.
Simone doesn’t color like this anymore. She stays within the lines and matches all of the colors.
I love her rainbow people, and I am trying to see if I can somehow incorporate this piece or something about it into the book I’ve written about three conversations I had with Simone about her skin tone. I’ve been thinking a lot about the book lately, how I can make it stronger. Maybe I can use this drawing as a teaching tool. Maybe not. Whatever the outcome, I’m so glad I snapped this picture and can look at it again and again.
