Honeysmoke, my debut picture book, is about a biracial girl who discovers her very own color. When I was a child, my family called me Honeysmoke. My mother is light-skinned, and she is the honey. My father is dark-skinned, and he is the smoke. Honeysmoke.
When my daughter started asking me about her skin tone when she was in preschool, I didn’t immediately know what to tell her. And then I thought of Honeysmoke. I could show her she is a little bit of mommy and a little bit of daddy, and that she, too, could discover her very own color.
So, here’s my question for all of you: What’s your color?
