Jada Pinkett Smith: “I made a promise to endow my little girl with the power to always know that her body, spirit and her mind are HER domain. Willow cut her hair because her beauty, her value, her worth is not measured by the length of her hair. It’s also a statement that claims that even little girls have the RIGHT to own themselves and should not be a slave to even their mother’s deepest insecurities, hopes and desires. Even little girls should not be a slave to the preconceived ideas of what a culture believes a little girl should be.”

Amen. Jada is doing what all parents should do. She is doing what’s in the best interest of her child. She is parenting.

Willow Smith is an entertainer, but she’s also someone’s daughter. When she shaved and cut her hair, many people fussed about it. I have to admit I wasn’t crazy about the Whip My Hair video at first. Truth is, the song is a mantra about confidence. Nadia loves to hear it once or twice a week, and no harm has been done.

I, too, have told myself that when Simone and Nadia get older and want to experiment with hair and clothes (as long as there is proper cover) that I will let them. My mother and I tussled in this area, but I was just trying to figure out my likes and dislikes.

Children need to discover who they are before they go other places and people try to tell them who they are. What they look like as they grow up doesn’t really matter. The important thing is that they grow up to be confident and strong. I will try not to be offended by dyes and shapes of hair. Hair can be cut and colored. It also can and will grow back.

What do you say?

Love it. Love love love. That is some power she is rockin’ whipping that hair around. And with all the outlandish (to us non-rockstar types) hair styles Willow wears all the time, sporting a buzz cut seems kind of tame to me. I agree, hair grows back and is easily changed.
In the music video her hair is whipping around bringing fun and color and confidence and dancing to everyone. That is just super awesome.

Jada’s words about her daughters hair were so well put and showed so much respect for her daughter as a young person who is learning to make her own decisions.
