beeswax, sweet almond oil, and cocoa butter lotion bars

I’ve been playing with items I can make for myself and give as gifts to friends, relatives and teachers. Most of my experiments don’t pass the test phase, but these lotion bars are keepers.

This is my first batch, and the bars have only three ingredients–beeswax, cocoa butter, and sweet almond oil. The basic recipe is to measure equal parts of all three ingredients, slowly melt them in a double boiler, and pour the oil into soap molds, muffin pans, whatever you have on hand. Let them cool, pop them out of the molds and enjoy.

Commercial lotions have all kinds of additives we don’t need on our skin. I was first turned onto lotion bars by LUSH. After you bathe or shower, the warmth of your skin melts the oil, which you use to lock in moisture. That’s it, and there’s no greasy feeling. I keep mine in a tin box away from water.

I used a little less beeswax than the other two ingredients so that the bars wouldn’t be too hard. I’m not sure if that strategy worked, as the bars are pretty hard. I will use even less beeswax the next time around and see what happens. I kept the recipe simple and didn’t add any essential oils, but I plan to experiment more and perfect some recipes in time for Christmas.

If all goes well, I will also make a body scrub with sea salt or brown sugar and some herb sachets to round out the gift. I like to make things and spruce them up and give them to folks. Making the bars is only part of the deal. I will wrap the gifts and give them some kind of signature treatment so that they look like something you’d get at your favorite spa. I don’t want to sell them. It’s more important for me to have gifts at the ready for whatever occasion presents itself.

I purchased the beeswax pastilles, cocoa butter wafers and the sweet almond oil for my recipe from Mountain Rose Herbs. The only downside of the whole project was the shipping. That’s not going to stop me. Give lotion bars a try.  If I can make them, anyone can.

Oooh, you can make lotion bars? Ingenius! I have some beeswax. Gotta give this a try. 🙂 Do you have a source for a recipe?

Take a look at this site.
One thing I didn’t mention is that I purchased a small scale to measure the cocoa butter and beeswax. I’ve tried to make items in the past, and I think I failed on the measuring front.
