Some parents are proud when their children do well in school, while others praise athletic talent. This week Ken and I were ecstatic when we learned Simone had expanded her discriminating palate. What did she do? She ate pizza at preschoool! And she liked it. She really liked it. Simone described the meal as “spicy” and declared she would eat it again. I wanted to throw up my hands and dance in the streets.
For some parents, a child trying and eating a new food is no big deal. Those parents brought up good, healthy eaters. We, on the other hand, have raised the pickiest eater of all time. Her favorite food is peanut butter and jelly, followed by chicken nuggets and bread. Eating pizza is a turning point for Simone. I can hide all kinds of nutritional goodies in pizza — meat, fruits, vegetables. Oh, the possibilities.
