I was touched by the pictures of journalist Euna Lee clutching her 4-year-old daughter. Laura Ling, 32, and Lee, 36, were arrested in March for illegally crossing into North Korea from China and were sentenced to 12 years of hard labor in June. They were pardoned after former President Bill Clinton met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.
I can’t imagine what that must have been like for her husband and her daughter. How do you explain to a 4-year-old that you don’t know when mommy is coming home?
Simone is the same age as Lee’s daughter. When I learned I was pregnant with her, my thoughts about work immediately changed. I was 14 weeks pregnant when Hurricane Charley charted a path toward St. Petersburg, Fla. That storm forced me to tell my secret to my editors. I wanted them to know I was carrying a baby and didn’t want to put it in harm’s way.
To some, I let down my editors that day. To others, my maternal instincts kicked into protective mode. All I know is I have never regretted it.
